Sandra Lee Colwell, née Biggs, a devoted mother and lifelong nurturer whose heart was always with the children she guided and loved, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. Born on February 24, 1948, at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California, Sandra’s journey was one marked by kindness, dedication, and warmth that touched all who knew her.
Growing up in Ridgecrest, California, Sandra graduated from Sherman E. Burroughs High School in 1966, during high school she also volunteered as a candy-striper at a local hospital, before setting out on a life full of purpose and care. On December 5, 1970, she married David J. Colwell in Camp Pendleton, California, beginning a partnership that shaped much of her life. Though David Colwell, her beloved husband, and her parents, William and Marie Biggs, have preceded her in passing, her spirit and memories remain vibrant with all who loved her.
Sandra poured her heart into working with children, as a dedicated Sunday school teacher, a volunteer in her daughters’ classrooms, and a room mom who delighted in bringing art projects to share. Her gentle nature, creativity, and genuine love for children made her a cherished presence in every classroom she entered. She was known as a nurturer who cared deeply for others and found joy in socializing and building meaningful connections. Her life’s work—both in her family and her community—was a testament to her steadfast compassion and dedication.
In addition to her volunteer work, Sandra was an active member of her church family at ELCA – New Spirit Lutheran Church in Tucson, Arizona, where she found community and purpose. She was also a devoted Girl Scout leader, guiding her daughters through the early years of their growth until high school, instilling values of courage, kindness, and curiosity. At home, she nurtured her passions for gardening and cooking, enjoyed the quiet pleasure of reading, engaged in friendly board games, and had an avid interest in true crime shows—each a reflection of her vibrant and multifaceted personality.
Sandra is survived by her loving daughters, Shelley and Karen Colwell, who carry forward her legacy of love, strength, and grace. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her nurturing spirit, warm smile, and kindness will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who knew her.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Sandra’s life will be held at New Spirit Lutheran Church, located at 8701 E Old Spanish Trail, Tucson, AZ 85710, on April 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM. It will be a gathering to honor her enduring contributions and the love she freely gave throughout her life.
Sandra Lee Colwell lived a life rich in love and service. She cared deeply for others, loved working with children, and cherished time spent with friends and family. Her memory inspires all who knew her to live with greater compassion and joy.
Donations in Sandra’s honor may be made to Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.
