Margaret Jane Tobias, "Jane", a cherished educator and devoted friend, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at her home in Green Valley, Tucson, under the compassionate care of Agape Hospice. Born on November 18, 1945, in the quaint town of Litchfield, Illinois, Margaret’s life journey was marked by a profound dedication to learning, friendship, and the simple joys of nature.
Jane’s early years in Litchfield laid the foundation for a lifetime of meaningful connections and achievements. She graduated from a college near Chicago while living in Springfield, Illinois—an accomplishment that propelled her into a fruitful career as a teacher at Sunnyside High School. Through her tireless work in education, Jane touched countless lives, fostering curiosity, kindness, and resilience in her students. Her classroom was more than a place of learning; it was a sanctuary where she inspired young minds to grow and explore.
Beyond her vocation, Jane was an adventurous spirit. She loved hiking through natural landscapes, always seeking solace and inspiration from the trails she traversed. Each year, she would visit Oregon, treasuring the time spent with dear friends amidst majestic scenery that seemed to echo her own boundless energy and warmth. Her affection for animals, especially dogs, spoke to her gentle soul and her unwavering capacity for love.
For many years, Jane and her beloved husband made their home in Green Valley, Arizona. Though they moved away for a period, the alluring charm of Green Valley called her back in the twilight of her days, offering comfort and familiarity. With her close friend Virginia—who stood by her side since seventh grade—Jane shared a rare and enduring bond that sustained her through life’s seasons.
Jane’s family heritage is deeply woven into the fabric of Illinois. She was the daughter of John Higgins and Dorothy Morgan, and the granddaughter of James R. Higgins and Adele Higgins Wiese, proprietors of the historic Higgins-Wiese Funeral Home in Gillespie, Illinois. This legacy of care and community service was a silent thread running through Jane’s own life of giving.
Preceded in death by her husband and her son, John M. Stempniak, Jane’s spirit reunites with theirs in eternal rest. A committal service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Illinois, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved family—a poignant return to the soil that nurtured her roots.
Margaret Jane Tobias leaves behind a world that is undeniably richer for her presence. She was, simply put, an AMAZING friend—a beacon of kindness and loyalty in a world often too fleeting for such constancy. As those who knew her reflect on her life, it is with a profound sense of gratitude and a heart full of treasured memories. Her legacy endures not only in the lessons she imparted but in the quiet, persistent love she sowed in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
