Margaret Elizabeth Callahan

Margaret Elizabeth Callahan, known to everyone who loved her as Margie, and to her family simply as Nanny, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, at the age of 91, surrounded by the family who loved her most.

Born in Washington Heights, New York, she spent seventy three years building a life in the Bronx before making her final home in Tucson, Arizona, in 2007, trading one kind of grit for another and never once slowing down in between.

She lived a life of work through occupations as a housekeeper, a nanny, a caretaker, and a bartender at different points along the way. No matter the job, she brought the same steady hands and sharp humor through all of it. Her truest occupation was always her devotion to her family. Once she stepped fully into that role, she never left it.

She was a woman of small rituals that meant everything. A hand of poker at the table. An evening with the Golden Girls. Laundry folded with the same care she gave to everything else in her house. Tea and cake shared with whoever happened to be sitting across from her, because with her, no one ever sat across from her for long without being fed something. A faithful parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, her belief in God was not loud, it was simply constant, the same way her love was.

Margie survived more than most people are asked to carry. She outlived her husband, Ed, and four of her five children, Margaret, Jimmy, Eddie, and Kevin, a weight that would have hardened a lesser woman. It never hardened her. She remained, until her final days, an eternal optimist, the kind of person who found the good in a room before she found anything else in it. Her humor stayed sharp. Her courage never dimmed. She was loving and selfless in the plainest, least complicated sense of those words, and everyone who sat at her table knew it.

She is survived by her son, Robert, her grandchildren Stephanie Smith (Danny), Jenna Bruns (Anthony), and Meghan Melfi (Joseph), and her great-grandchildren Ava, Jayden, Lola, Dominic, Gia, Joe, Leah, and Aubree, each of whom carries a piece of her forward. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Callahan, her children Margaret, Jimmy, Eddie, and Kevin, her parents Joseph and Ivy King, and her siblings Grace, Donald, Perry, and Norman.

Margie Callahan lived long enough to lose nearly everyone she loved most, and somehow remained true to who she was at her core. That may be the truest thing that can be said of her. What she leaves behind is a family that is larger, warmer, and more resilient for having been shaped by her

She has gone home now, to her beloved husband and children who went before her, and to the God who never once let her go.

Rest now, Nanny. The table you kept so full will carry your seat forever, and the family you built will hold the door open for you
