Edith Mary Allen, a vibrant soul whose life was woven from enduring love, spirited adventure, and steadfast devotion, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. Born Edith Mary Hourscht on August 25, 1935, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, she blossomed from the wide-open spaces of her early childhood on a farm in Lake Wilson, Minnesota, into a woman whose heart forever embraced the vastness of the desert and the intimacy of close-knit family bonds.

Edith's journey was shaped by a profound connection to faith and family. Raised Catholic, her spirituality deepened over the years, becoming a guiding force that illuminated her path through life's joys and challenges. In 1956, she married Raymond Joseph Allen, embarking on an extraordinary chapter marked by travels across France, Germany, Bermuda, and throughout the United States during his military career. Despite the miles traveled, Tucson became their steadfast home from 1968, a place Edith would come to love with quiet passion. Though their marriage ended in 1979, the beautiful family they created remained her heart’s cornerstone.

The rhythm of Edith’s life was punctuated by her career at Frys Food Store, where she dedicated 25 years of hard work before retirement. Yet it was in the dance halls and family gatherings where Edith truly shone. She was a gifted dancer, a lifelong member of the West Coast Swing Club, and proudly earned an award for her longevity and talent in the community she loved. Her laughter and grace often filled the air, especially during the seasonal celebrations she adored—her Christmas parties were legendary, where friends overflowed to fill the rooms, and every guest was a cherished companion. “She never knew a stranger,” those who knew her often said, for Edith’s warmth reached beyond blood ties to embrace friends and neighbors as family.

Edith’s spirit was adventurous and tireless, qualities born of her farmhouse upbringing that made her as comfortable beneath a wide-open sky as amidst the rugged trails of Mt. Lemmon and the tranquil beauty of Madera Canyon. She could often be found dancing aboard a boat on Canyon Lake, her lightness of step echoing her joyful soul—a woman who loved the desert’s stark elegance and the embrace of the outdoors.

Above all, Edith was a mother; her five children—Kathleen, Greg (Delores), David (Marlena), Julie (Dwayne), and Robert (Andrea)—were her world, the center to which all else revolved. She was a cornerstone to eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, actively nurturing and shaping their lives, embodying the essence of a great-grandmother whose love and guidance crafted a lineage steeped in affection and strength.

Edith was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Florence and Clarence Hourscht; her sisters, Joyce Phelps and Patricia Garrity; and her brother, Douglas Hourscht. Yet her presence remains indelibly etched in those she leaves behind—a living legacy of love, resilience, and joy.

As the desert sunsets fade and the seasons turn, those who loved Edith Mary Allen hold in their hearts the memory of a woman who danced through life with boundless cheer, who cherished her family above all, and whose soul forever carried the spirit of home, wherever the journey led. Her story is one of enduring grace and the unbreakable bonds of love that continue to ripple through the lives she touched.
