It is with a profound sense of loss and reflection that we announce the passing of John Hemer Lennarson, affectionately known to some as "Doc John” and to others as “Uncle Ketchup”. John departed this world on February 23, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. Born on March 9, 1942, in Waukegan, Illinois, John lived life rich with purpose, service, and connections that span generations.
A dedicated dentist for over two decades in Iowa City, Iowa, John was revered not only for his professional craftsmanship but for the warmth he extended to all those who entered his practice. His meticulous attention to detail and the comforting atmosphere he cultivated made him beloved among his patients. John was never one to shy away from infusing a smart sense of humor into his interactions, leaving a lasting impression on all who encountered his huge smile and the twinkle in his eyes. He could ease worries with a laugh, and his resilience in the face of adversity stood as a testament to his character. Humble and gracious, John never sought the spotlight.
His academic journey was distinguished, having obtained his undergraduate degree and MBA from Bowling Green State University, followed by a Dental Degree (DDS) from the University of Iowa. Dentistry was a second profession for John after working for American Airlines in New York City. When he entered dental school he was fondly referred to as “Grandpa” by his classmates. They benefitted from his life experiences and his wisdom. As a testament to his craft, John maintained his own lab at home, where he handcrafted many of the crowns he expertly prepared for his patients. He was also known for his heartfelt, personalized notes and cards, a small but significant way in which he touched the lives of those around him. His family and friends will no doubt miss those epistles.
John's love for family was paramount throughout his life. He married Sherri Cress in 1983 in Iowa City, Iowa, and together they nurtured a family that reflects his values of connection and generosity. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Sherri Cress Lennarson; son, Dr. Peter Lennarson and his wife, Nancy; grandsons, Tyus (Kenzie), Samson (Emma), Nathan, Ethan, and Mike; great granddaughters, Paisley and Quinley; daughter, Kimberly Cooper; granddaughter, Wynn and grandson, Geo; daughter, Jennifer Queram and her husband, Frank; and his sister’s children, PJ Long and Megan Leslie.
He will also be fondly remembered by his godchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were fortunate enough to share in his vibrant life. Notably, John held a special affection for his mother-in-law, Lorna "Maude" Cress.
In addition to his professional life, John embraced a variety of hobbies and interests that showcased his zest for living. He was an avid fisherman and traveler, with a profound appreciation for the wilderness and camping. His passion for food was evident; it was his love language, particularly when it came to preparing for and entertaining others. He faithfully read the Wall Street Journal daily and kept up on current events. Prior to cranial surgery in 2011 he was an enthusiastic golfer. Golf and warmer weather were some of the reasons John and Sherri relocated to Tucson in 2010. John followed financial markets with interest and was a devoted fan of college sports, especially the University of Iowa and the University of Arizona.
John's legacy lives on not only through his family but also through the countless lives he touched in his practice and the community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Harriet Lennarson; and his sister, Meredith Long.
As we celebrate the life of John Hemer Lennarson, we honor a man who embodied kindness, perseverance, and a genuine connection to others. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life for John will take place this summer in Gowrie, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to TMC Hospice or to Ben’s Bells.
